The 100-Year-Old Electric Car
You may have an old Baker, but you certainly have not given state-of-the art EVs a real chance, especially if you still think they only have a range of 100 miles-- even the EV-1's were doing better than that before GM started crushing them. That's WHY they crushed them-- GM knew just how trouble-free and inexpensive EVs are to use, they knew people would fall in love with them, and that they would lose lots of money on a car that did not need lots of parts and maintenance. If EVs are such a dead end, GM and the other car makers would not have gone to such enormous effort and would not have endured such bad publicity to destroy them-- if they were really so bad they could simply have let the owners keep them, and disappointed owners would have spread the word and killed any demand for them. But as you know, that's not what happened-- electric car lessees were allowing themselves to be arrested rather than willingly turning over the cars they loved so. The truth is that the lack of good batteries were the only thing holding back EVs, and especially in the last 2 years, battery tech has made enormous progress. Today's EVs have a range of 130 miles... 250 miles... 350 miles, maybe more depending on battery pack size. They can be recharged in less than 10 minutes, and if someone is only paying about five bucks to drive 250 miles rather than $60 bucks or more to drive the same distance in an ICE (internal combustion engine) car, all but the most serious Luddite would rather drive an EV. I'm on the waiting list for two Phoenix EVs, and when I get them, maybe I can get Ed Begley to help me bring one over to you and help me talk you into driving one for a week or so, You'll see they are far more convenient and enjoyable than you might think. Gasoline will be hitting $6. a gallon within the next 18 months-- it's inevitable, with millions of new Chinese and Indian drivers to dry up what little petroleum is left. Fuel cells, biodiesel, ethanol, etc., they all have insurmountable problems, either with cost of their technology, supply bottlenecks, and/ or emissions, etc... EVs are the only legitimate, real-time answer. As for power source, check out Nanosolar's radical new PowerSheet flexible solar panels-- they are already in high-volume production. The panels are just as efficient as the best silicon solar panels sold today, yet only cost 30 cents per watt. Their panels are printed on presses similar to how newspapers are printed, at the rate of 30 FEET per minute-- the company expects to be able to install solar panels on 100,000 homes per year, but I hope they build even more of their factories to blanket our homes, factories and office buildings with their panels. Then we can all drive electrically charge-free-- so-to-speak.

[click to show/hide details] Details:
OVERVIEW:The mission of the campground host (VIP) is to work as part of the Devils Tower staff ensuring that all visitors experience the best public service that the National Park Service can offer. The overall duties of campground hosts are to greet visitors using the campground, help visitors access park facilities and to maintain a safe and enjoyable visitor experience. Hosts should be prepared for a low stress, fun summer as part of the Devils Tower staff.

DAILY DUTIES: The primary duty each working day will be to greet campers and answer questions about campground registration park resources & facilities. The campground is on a self/camper register system. Hosts may occasionally need to explain park regulations and policy. Volunteers do not have enforcement power and are expected to forward any potential conflicts or violations to a law enforcement ranger.

During the 2006 summer season, there will be 40 regular campsites and 3 group sites available. The campground can fill in the late afternoon/evening. The hosts will remain visible and available during the hours of highest registration. Frequent walks around the loop may be required during this time. Hosts will give site availability updates as needed to the entrance station and visitor center (VC) by phone (or radio if necessary.) When the campground fills the host will hang the "Campground Full" sign and notify the entrance station and VC.

When registration quiets down (usually early evening), the host will conduct a final walk through ensuring we have "happy campers." Other tasks during this last walk through will include noting maintenance problems, picking up litter, identifying campers that have not registered and informing the visitors of ranger led activities. Problems encountered should be relayed to a law enforcement ranger.

In the morning, the host(s) will walk (or bike, or skip) around the loop and remove any registration tabs that will expire that day. If the campground did not fill that night, the host will relay the occupancy to the patrol ranger. An eye can be kept open for squatters (illegal campers) or signs of problems. There should be a few hours of relative quiet before the registration cycle begins again.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:Host may be asked to assist with some traffic management in and around the campground area. Limited parking space at the visitor center means some visitors with camper trailers & motor homes may leave their vehicles in an overflow area near the campground. The host may be asked to help visitors efficiently park their oversized vehicles.

Additional interests or skills may be utilized by the park on an as needed basis. Volunteer hosts are not expected to fulfill any duties other than those listed above

NOTE: Volunteer may be required to undergo a Background Investigation.

FACILITIES:Campground hosts are expected to live on site at the campground. A full hook up campsite will be provided. Basic groceries and other amenities are available in Hulett (9 miles.)

SCHEDULE: Hosts will be provided with regularly scheduled days off in order to allow our hard working volunteers a chance to recreate and experience the Black Hills.

Aztec Ruins National Monument (NM) (www.nps.gov/azru) has an interesting, challenging, and fun summer opportunity for an energetic volunteer or volunteers with their own RV. This volunteer ranger position shares the story of the ancient Southwest with people from around the world and around a RV Park. The volunteer ranger(s) meet and greet people as they arrive at a visitor center, rove the park grounds and tell people about the areas rich history, and assist in a variety of projects at the park. In addition, the volunteer rangers will share the story of this place and other nearby national parks with tourists at the Desert Rose RV Resort.

The position will last 18 to 20 weeks, between late April and early September, 32-hours per week. Approximately 24 hours each week the volunteer will be at Aztec Ruins National Monument, and another 8 hours they will serve at the Desert Rose RV Resort located ten miles south of the monument in Bloomfield, New Mexico. The monument will pay for the volunteer's site rental, including hookups, and provide $7/day to cover transportation expenses to and from the monument. (Visit www.desertrosepark.com to learn more about the RV Park.)

Aztec Ruins is located in northwestern New Mexico near the Four Corners. Nearby is the famous canyon country of the Southwest and the towering Rocky Mountains. The monument itself preserves and interprets a unique set of ancestral Pueblo ruins built almost 900-years ago. Most impressive is the West Ruin, a massive "Chacoan Great House" that still stands three stories high with over 400-rooms and spreads wider across than a football field. Many rooms along the trail covered by the original, still intact roofs! (Visit www.nps.gov/azru to learn more.)

A background or strong interest in archeology and ancient Pueblo culture is desirable, along with a love and appreciation for your national parks. A background check including finger prints may be required, along with a valid state driver's license. The volunteer most own their own RV. The volunteer(s) will stay at the Bloomfield KOA, (www.desertrosepark.com).

Interested? Contact George Herring at Aztec Ruins National Monument for more information. We will accept applications through February 15.
